R.I.P my friend it was a pleasure knowing you once again R.I.P mate Dave
So sad to have to say good bye to uncle Bert and I’m thankful that he phoned me only two weeks before and even told me to get a haircut ! When I was young he gave me the time and guidance I needed to get me back on track with my life and I wanted to be just like you invincible and untouchable ( or at least in the eyes of your Quarter Master !) I will never forget you Uncle Bert and I will carry your memory in my heart until we meet again.
Thank you Wacker for your never failing good cheer, always one for raising spirits and helping others. In fond memory.

Gone but never forgotten. No words can describe knowing that I will not get to see you again. Thank you for having been in my life and teaching me so much. There are so many great memories from over the years, and I will always treasure them. Rest in Peace.
Remembering you fondly Uncle Bert, with the twinkliest eyes, full of fun and mischief. Although we didn't see you as much as we'd have liked, I will always remember your kindness and how much fun you were. You gave us Dukey, our beloved Budgie, and I'm sure you taught it a couple of cheeky phrases before passing him to us! I smile when I think of you and today I am sending a Matthews-Hug full of love to your girls, grandchildren and anyone missing you. RIP up there. Lots of love, Nicky xxx
With fondest memories of a lovely man and a gentleman R.I.P
My Uncle Bert I remember you with a smile always telling a joke or sharing stories of your army days . A wonderful down to earth man who showed much love to all his family. May you rest in peace . Thinking of you and your immediate family lots of love Debbie Sean Brad and Milly xx
You have been a steady rock and role model throughout my younger life. A man with morals, someone to look up to and a soldier at heart. As your grandson, I always enjoyed the times around the dinner table when you would recount those stories of old; your experiences from your career. Then came the banter between a mudguard and a Queer on horseback as we both grew older. You were always one to tell a joke or fall asleep in front of the TV and have your teeth come loose. You will be missed Opa, you are already. You may be gone, but you will never be forgotten. Thank you for blessing me with your life. Stand Down Soldier and may you Rest In Peace.
It has been an Honour to have known and served with you during my service. After I joined TOOT I looked forward to reading your messages every day. You have now taken your place in God House and it is a gain for him You are already a great miss to us all and will always be in our thoughts. Till we meet again my friend.
You will always be remember for your humour and willingness in my Troop in Germany Wacker. you also will be remembered by all that served with you. R.I.P. Wacker
Wacker, a true friend to all. will be missed by us all , You may be gone but not forgotten by everyone who knew you.
Wacker the man who could turn his hand to anything repairable, was there an item he could not mend or repair. It mattered not to him who you were, if he could help he would. A man who will be talked about with affection for many years to come.

My dear Wacker, I am going to miss listening to your old stories over a mug of tea. The tales of the antics that you and my Dad would get up to. You will now both be able to compare notes and see who exaggerated the most. Rest in peace, Wacker. You've been everyones friend.
I have known Wacker all my Army life. He was there when I joined and he gave me great advice that stood me in good stead all my army career. He was a gentlemen and anyone who met him respected him. My dear brother Anthony Herbert Matthews, known to me and my family as "our Bert" and to all his many Army friends as "Wacker". I am not amazed or surprised by the many kind tributes paid to my brother. He was very proud of his regiment "The Life Guards" and his many comrades he met and shared with in his Army career. Being his younger brother, he was my guardian in my earlier years. He was brave, courageous, erratic, kind and generous and a skilful tradesman in all aspects - all rolled into one. He loved his music, was funny and could push many boundaries, sometimes a bit too far!! But because of the character he was, he was loved and respected for the man he really was. He loved his family and would do anything for his girls, showing them by example and preparing them for the life they would eventually live. My dear brother Bert, no more can we share a joke and laugh together, you gave me the courage and strength in my earlier years and, as the years unfold, I will miss you more and more each day. You have left a massive hole in our family and your memory will be treasured by all who knew you. RIP my dear brother.
My dearest Wacker you were the first to greet me all those years ago when I first joined the Regiment. Kind, thoughtful and helpful Rest in Peace my Friend the fresh faced trooper
One of the kindest, funniest uncles a girl could have. He always made me laugh and although I didn't see him that often I do remember the smiles and laughter that epitomised my Uncle Bert. My thoughts are with your immediate family and friends with lots of love, Mich xxx
Rest easy mate it was a great honour to serve with you and call you brother.
Wacker is one of very few who has genuinely earned the title of a legendary Life Guard. He served with both my dad and I, and a more decent, genuine and helpful man you would never meet. Hopefully at the bar reunited with dad now. RIP Wacker - the world is a poorer place now.
Wacker was certainly not the person with the prettyest face I ever met. Although it is one of those faces I knew for most of my Service. Wackers face was what he viewed us through rather than a statement about the sort of genuine Guy he was who took an interest in every person he met. You would have to be a nasty for him not to like you. The Photo Cobby took of Wacker last year and placed on this Board show a Wacker as we knew him. Indeed the recent Photos of Wackers 80th Birthday Party show him as many of us remember him. It was great the Daughters, and family including Bella who was an inspiration to Wacker, could attend his recent Birthday together with a few of his Friends. Not forgetting his beloved Pooches too. Wacker was known to many from all walks of life, to those of us who served in the same Regiment, we were fortunate indeed. A friend to many, a saviour to a few, loved by all that knew him. May I take this opportunity to offer my condolences to the family (particularly Tanja) and friends of Wacker.
Wacker was without doubt one of the great characters in The Life Guards. He will be much missed by all those who had the privilege of serving with him. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family and close friends. RIP Whacker.
Rest in peace buddy, till we meet again!
